The Navratri Fasting Foods That Keep You Energised All 9 Days

Day 1 of the fast feels great. You’re light, focused, maybe even a little proud of yourself.

By Day 4, something shifts. You’re dragging through work, your head feels heavy by evening, and the thought of three hours of garba makes you want to lie down instead. Most people blame “the fast.” But the fast usually isn’t the problem.

The problem is what’s on the plate. Look closely at a typical vrat thali and you’ll notice it’s almost entirely carbohydrate. Here’s why that matters, what to eat instead, and how to add protein (including protein powder) without breaking a single fasting rule.

What’s Really in Most Navratri Fast Food

Think about a normal vrat day in most Indian homes: sabudana khichdi, aloo sabzi, kuttu puris, banana chips, maybe some kheer. Delicious, filling, and very low in protein.

Sabudana is the biggest culprit. It’s almost pure starch, with less than 1g of protein per 100g. That big bowl of khichdi gets most of its protein from the handful of peanuts sprinkled on top.

Here’s roughly what a typical vrat day adds up to:

Meal

What you eat

Protein (approx.)

Morning

Chai + 1 banana

2g

Lunch

1 bowl sabudana khichdi

4g

Evening

Aloo chips or fried snack

2g

Dinner

2 kuttu puris + aloo sabzi

6g

Dessert

Small bowl of kheer

3g

Total

~17g

Indian guidelines suggest roughly 0.8g of protein per kg of body weight. For a 60kg adult, that’s about 48g a day. A typical vrat day delivers barely a third of that. Do this for nine days and the Day 4 slump suddenly makes sense.

Why Your Legs Give Out Halfway Through Garba

Carbs give you quick energy, but they burn out fast. Without protein to slow things down, you get a spike, a crash, and then cravings. That’s why so many people reach for fried snacks by 4 PM on a fast.

There’s a second, slower problem. Over several days of very low protein, your body finds it harder to maintain and repair muscle, and you feel it as heavy legs and general fatigue.

And if you’re in Gujarat (or anywhere with serious garba), the fast doesn’t end at sunset. It ends after two or three hours of dancing. Doing that on 17g of protein and a plate of fried potato is why your legs give out halfway through the night.

The Best Navratri Fasting Foods for Protein

The good news: the best protein sources are already allowed in most vrat traditions. You just need to make them the main dish instead of the garnish.

Why Peanut Butter Is the Easiest Vrat Protein

Peanuts are already in almost every vrat kitchen. Peanut butter just makes them faster: no roasting, no crushing, and a spoonful is ready in seconds.

The catch is the jar. Many peanut butters on Indian shelves contain added sugar, palm oil, or regular table salt, and table salt is exactly what most families avoid during the fast. So for vrat, the ingredient list should read one thing only: peanuts.

Alpino Natural Peanut Butter is made from 100% roasted peanuts, with no added sugar, salt, or palm oil. It packs 30g of protein per 100g, so two tablespoons give you roughly 10g of protein. It comes in Crunch and Smooth.

A few easy ways to use it during the fast:

  • Banana + peanut butter for breakfast: the fastest high-protein vrat meal there is.

  • Apple slices with a peanut butter dip for an evening snack instead of fried chips.

  • A spoonful blended into milk or a thandai shake for extra protein and creaminess.

  • Roasted makhana tossed in a little warm peanut butter and a pinch of sendha namak, for a crunchy snack that doesn’t need frying.

Here’s the same vrat day, upgraded:

Meal

What you eat

Protein (approx.)

Morning

Banana with 2 tbsp natural peanut butter + glass of milk

19g

Lunch

2 rajgira rotis + paneer sabzi (75g paneer)

7g to 34g

Same rules. Same festival flavours. More than three times the protein.

Can You Have Protein Powder During Navratri Fast?

Short answer: yes, for most people on a phalahar fast, as long as the label passes the checks below. “It’s vegetarian” isn’t the test. The ingredient list is.

Navratri rules are about specific food groups: most families avoid grains, most legumes, regular salt, and often heavily processed food. A protein powder can be 100% vegetarian and still contain several of these. Flip your tub around and look for:

On the label

Why it matters during vrat

Maltodextrin

Usually made from corn, rice, or wheat, and labels rarely say which

Soy protein or soy lecithin

Soy is a legume, avoided in most vrat traditions

Pea protein

Also a legume, and the base of many “plant protein” powders

Rice protein, oat flour, wheat fillers

Grains, which most families skip for nine days

Salt / sodium chloride

Many homes allow only sendha namak

Artificial flavours and colours

Strict fasters prefer to avoid processed additives

What usually passes: whey or casein (if you include dairy in your fast), peanut protein (peanuts are a vrat staple across much of India), dry fruits, and traditional spices like cardamom and saffron.

This is where thandai comes in. Alpino Supernatural Peanut Protein in Thandai Fusion is built on peanut protein and flavoured with the same things that go into festive thandai: cashew, almond, pistachio, javitri, cardamom, nutmeg, and saffron. There are no grains, no soy, no added salt, and zero added sugar (it’s sweetened with stevia). One 37g scoop gives you 26g of protein.

Full transparency: the tub also contains coconut-based MCT, sunflower lecithin, xanthan gum, and a natural kesar milk masala flavour, which keep it smooth and easy to mix. The label also declares milk as an allergen. Most phalahar fasts are fine with these, but if your family avoids all packaged food during vrat, stick to the whole-food plan above. It works perfectly well on its own.

Vrat thandai shake (about 34g protein): 1 scoop Thandai Fusion + 250ml chilled milk + 2 to 3 ice cubes. Blend for 45 seconds, top with crushed pistachios and a few saffron strands. Drink it 1.5 to 2 hours before garba. Want it richer? Add a spoonful of natural peanut butter before blending.

Navratri Fasting Mistakes That Leave You Exhausted

Treating peanuts and paneer as garnish. They’re the two strongest protein sources you’re allowed. Double the peanuts in your khichdi and make paneer a daily dish.

Thinking “fasting food” means healthy food. Kuttu pakoras, sabudana vadas, and banana chips are still deep-fried snacks. It’s entirely possible to gain weight during a fast because of them.

Trusting “vrat-friendly” stickers blindly. Many packaged foods carry that label without being healthy, or even fully compliant with your family’s rules. Read the ingredients yourself.

Replacing meals with shakes. A shake is a top-up. One scoop a day alongside real meals is enough.

Forgetting water. October can still be warm, and dehydration feels a lot like hunger and fatigue. Coconut water and buttermilk count too.

The same principles work for Chaitra Navratri, Ekadashi, and Shravan fasts: make protein the main dish and let the carbs play support.

A note on tradition: fasting rules differ by family, region, and community, and some households avoid all packaged foods. Always follow your own tradition. If you have diabetes, are pregnant, or manage any health condition, talk to your doctor before a strict fast or adding supplements.

Fast Strong, Dance Longer This Navratri

Navratri is about devotion, not depletion. With a few small swaps, you can fast all nine days, dance every night, and still feel like yourself on Day 9.

Start your mornings with a spoon of Alpino Natural Peanut Butter on a banana. And if you need a protein boost before garba, Alpino Thandai Fusion is on Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart, so you can get it in about 10 minutes and have your first vrat thandai shake ready before tonight’s garba.
