7 Frequently Asked Questions about Muesli

by Alpino Health Foods Private Limited on May 27, 2021

  • What are the benefits of eating muesli?

  • Muesli contains oats as its main ingredient and is, therefore, very high in fiber. Whole grains such as wheat, barley, ragi or the other variants containing grains such as quinoa, buckwheat and amaranth, regulate the digestive system. It has a high content of carbohydrates that provides you with energy throughout the day. Muesli contains sufficient amounts of beta-glucan, which is known to reduce LDL cholesterol by up to 10 percent, thus reducing the risk of heart diseases. Loaded with nuts like almonds, pistachio, peanuts, walnuts, and cashew nuts, muesli is a very good source of omega-3 fatty acids. This acid is very famous for keeping your hair strong, eyes healthy, bringing a glow to your face and maintaining heart health. Your bones and teeth would become stronger as muesli is packed with a lot of minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and selenium. Iron, which fights fatigue, balances the haemoglobin in the body and keeps a check on the blood pressure is found in muesli. Vitamin A, E, K and C are also found in sufficient quantities in it.

Muesli contains all the healthy things that your mother always has told you to consume, but of course, in this case, taste is not compromised upon.

  • Which is better for weight loss: oats, muesli or cornflakes?

  • Common oat is a species of cereal grain. Coming directly from nature's lap, it is highly healthy and is consumed as oatmeal for breakfast everywhere in the world. Considering its benefits that range from maintaining heart health and sugar levels to regulating blood pressure and promoting weight loss, oats are ideal for anybody who is looking for a breakfast option as it does not hinder their diet, if not helps in weight loss on its own. Oats have  no added sugar because of which it is ideal to be consumed with the aim of weight loss.

Muesli on the other hand is not too far behind oats. Muesli contains a lot of grains and nuts and other ingredients, some of which may have been added after roasting in addition to sugar. Muesli can not be said to be an ideal breakfast option for a person who is focusing on weight loss but it definitely proves to be the healthiest breakfast option.

Cornflakes are a healthy breakfast option but can it be consumed for weight loss? The answer should be a straight NO. Cornflakes contain high amounts of added sugar and are high in carbohydrate content, both the ingredients being inappropriate for weight loss.

Therefore, the clear winner for weight loss would be oats. However, muesli is not too far away in the nutritional content.

  • Are muesli and granola the same?

  • As mentioned earlier, muesli is a mixture of oats, nuts, grains, seeds and dry fruits. It was created by Maximillian Bircher-Benner, a Swiss doctor and nutritionist. The ingredients in muesli are not baked and no extra sugar is added to it. It is thus raw and loose. You may enjoy it directly from the packet or may soak it overnight in milk or yogurt to make a porridge.

Granola on the other hand is a breakfast option with very similar ingredients to that of muesli. It was created by American physician James Caleb Jackson. The only difference that sets them apart is the method through which granola is prepared. It is made by adding honey, maple syrup or cane sugar to the oats, grains, nuts and dry fruits and baking them afterward. This gives granola its classic crunch and texture. Granola is usually served cold. It is used as a crunchy topping for yogurt or as a snack directly out of the bag.

Muesli is therefore considered healthier than granola as it is not baked and does not contain any added sugar.
